Collage Artist - Author - Mother
Hi, my name is Shona Cole and I love art! Always have. But I have not always taken the time to do art. Growing up in Ireland I was into dance, theater, poetry and I took art classes. I pretty much dabbled in anything arty. But as an older teen I learned in school that I should get a college degree and then a good job. I did not yet understand the possibility of non-commercial, life enhancing creativity.
After college, after marriage, after years at a 'real' non-art job when I was pregnant with my first child I re-discovered the artsy side of myself. I started crafting. I discovered rubber stamping and a wonderful magazine by Stampington & Co. called Somerset Studio. For years I poured over every issue, trying out the techniques and soon I got up the courage to submit some art. I was fortunate to have one of my submissions accepted. That was the encouragement that I needed. I have been working on collage art ever since. I made it my personal goal to find my own style and purpose in art. I bought a digital camera and trained it on my beautiful children. And finally I had found my muse!
Being a mother has given me an insight into a lovely, fun, poetic way of life. Creating art has become a part of our daily life. I do crafts for me and alongside my children. I also began writing again. I found all my old teenage angst poetry in notebooks and journals. Some were decent, some horrible! But I launched myself into learning the discipline of writing. I am not a poet by any measure. But I love to add poetry about my kids and life into my collages!
I wrote my book 'The Artistic Mother' to share with other moms what I have learned along the way about the importance of doing art, for sanity as much as for expression! I have this website to further that goal.If even one young mother discovers the love of crafting and shares it with her children after visiting this site or reading my book then it will be all worth it! I hope that is you. I wish you all the best on your collage art journey!
