Collage Books
You can, as I have, learn many techniques from collage books. I would like to recommend a few books to you. Some are a great source of 'how to' techniques, others are more inspirational. Either way, I consider these books a must have if you are going to pursue collage. These books are just a few from my ‘self-taught’ collage curriculum:
1) Collage Discovery Workbook By Claudine Hellmuth This collage book is dear to my heart as it was the first ‘how to’ book I purchased. I scoured the contents, gazing for hours at the collage images, trying every technique I knew in my heart I was born to make too. From this book you will learn basic collage techniques, how to work on stretched canvas collage, use acrylic paint, glue, the ins and outs of basic compositional decision making.
2) Spilling Open by Sabrina Ward Harrison This book - a handmade journal with some honest handwritten reflections, captured moment photographs with an interesting insight into what it means to be a woman – is purely an inspirational book. I remember when I first got it - here was a piece of work I would have loved to create, but didn’t. I have studied every page and marveled at her creativity and realness. Sabrina was ahead of her time. This book and her subsequent books are a must for any collage artist’s bookshelf.
3) Celebrate Your Creative Self by Mary Todd Beam This book outlines wonderful techniques for working with liquid acrylics. While the book focuses on fine art landscape painting techniques I find it to be very inspiring. You need to be willing to take the techniques she teaches and bring them to your collage work.
4) The Art of Personal Imagery by Corey Moortgat This book was essential for encouraging me to use my own personal imagery in my artwork and encouragement to work with family focused content. If you have boys and like the layered, vintage look then you will be really inspired, when Corey wrote the book she had one boy and made some lovely journals and baby boy inspired artwork. Woven throughout the book are articles on collage techniques, working with paint and photography tips and creative inspiration.
5) Creative Paint Workshop for Mixed-Media Artists by Ann Baldwin This is a great book for learning the ins and outs of acrylic painting and collage. She covers these topics: composition, use of texture and layering in collage, beeswax collage, integrating text and digital imagery to collage art. I love that this book is spiral bound, so it lays flat while reading it or following directions.
6) Collage Unleashed by Traci Bautista Traci gives multiple techniques for working with acrylic paints, making background papers, journaling, working on fabric and combining her papers into jagged, creative, interesting handmade journals in this colorful and inspiring collage book. She works with bright colors and doodles and gives great project leads and tips on working with paint and pen.
7) Taking Flight By Kelly Rae This is both an inspiring book and a practical how to guide. I like books that have a little more than just the techniques, this is one of those. The author takes the time to inspire readers to want to create, which can be very useful on those weeks where you just don’t feel creative.
8) Artists' Journals and Sketchbooks By Lynne Perella This book is chock full of little fun ways to embellish a page. I have used almost all the techniques in this book one way or another. There are no step by step technique photos, but lots of written how to steps along with the finished projects.
9) The Complete Guide to Altered Imagery By Karen Michel This book teaches how to alter all kinds of photographs – professionally printed ones and inkjet printed photos. So if you are looking for ideas for altering collage images this is the book to get.
10) Altered Art By Terry Taylor This book starts with a brief history of Altered Art and then outlines some basic tools, image & embellishments sources, techniques and some creative exercises. The next chapters cover ideas and techniques for altering books (the largest section of the book), boxes & tins, cards and tags and finally (briefly) objects.
11) Pretty Little Things By Sally Jean Alexander While not a collage book, this is the best book about soldering on the market. Sally Jean covers all the tools and directions plus her projects are adorable and inspiring.
12) Collage Journeys: A Practical Guide to Creating Personal Artwork By Jane Davies This is a great collage book exploring the art of journal making. This book gives you a good mixture of techniques and inspiration. It discusses gathering collage materials and tools, layering and using text in collage. It has some great get-creating project ideas.
13) Exhibition 36 By Susan Tuttle This is a collage book full of discussions and projects. There are few stepped out project photos, but a lot of written directions on a wide range of media and topics from 36 different artists. There is a section of interviews with professional artists is an inspiring read.
14) The Creative Entrepreneur By Lisa Sonora Beam I like how this woman thinks – she is all about getting artistic folks to make a business plan for their craft business. She offers many tools for exploring your artistic strengths and weaknesses and what to develop as you build your art vision. While it is not a technique book it is great for thinking about your art goals, which can inspire you to get busy creating.
