Altered Art
Altered art is a form of art where the artist changes, adds to or alters an existing object or artwork. In deciding if something can be called an altered art piece there should be some level of -intention- on the part of the manufacturer of the object to be altered.
Paper, stretched canvas and so on are manufactured with the intention of being used for craft. The manufacturer set out to make something for the artist to create on. Objects used in altered art, on the other hand, are usually things intended for some other purpose. The altered artist finds an object and decides to make something new out of it. There are many different things that you could find to alter:
*Books: old bound books, children’s board books *Journals *Envelopes or other packing materials *Boxes: such as cigar, match or cereal boxes *Labels or tags or other office supplies *Bottles *Photo frames *Cans or other types of tins *Furniture *Clothing *Dolls or toys to name a few!
In stores there are many things that are sold especially to be decorated or altered such as unfinished wooden boxes, frames and furniture or paper mache faux bird cages, frames or trinket boxes. It is a fine line as to whether these can be considered -altered art-, but why worry about semantics? To find things to alter, simply open your eyes to your world. You probably throw out old boxes, book, clothing, toys that could be altered in someway and given the breath of new life. Check out these step by step instructions of how to alter a board book!
